Football Manager Beginners guide to the Advanced Playmaker

Football Manager Beginners guide Advanced Playmaker
Football Manager Beginners guide Advanced Playmaker
The advanced playmaker has become an important part of tactic creation on football manager. That one key player to unlock a defence, turn defence into attack. The one player within your team that you need to make things tick and get the chances created.

What is an advanced playmaker

An advanced playmaker has the ability to play in the midfield or on the wings, they are generally going to be creative players. The "number 10" as they are often called can sit behind the striker and then pick out that key pass to unlock the oposition defense. They will generally play higher up the pitch and will not get stuck into tackles too much, instead working on being in the right position to receive the ball and make something happen. There should always be one or two players in your team who can make THAT pass or get things moving for your team. Personally I like to create tactics where there are two grafters in the middle of the pitch, usually a ball winning midfielder and a box to box midfielder and then have an advanced play maker just sitting next to them, ready to receive a pass and make something happen.

Key attributes for an advanced playmaker

When you are looking for an advanced playmaker, there are certain attributes that are very important. We will review these attributes and describe why they are important for this player role.

Vision - Being able to see what will happen on the football pitch is vital for the advanced playmaker, can they see that your winger is making a clever run and could be in a position to put in a good cross? Or are they able to see your striker is unmarked and in a good position to take a shot at goal. Vision is the attribute a player needs to have to be able to see what is happening before it has actually happened.

Passing - So once your advanced playmaker has seen your striker, does he has a pass in his locker to pick out the player he has seen. Think of how Steven Gerrard plays, with his excellent range of passing, within seconds, Gerrard has pinged a 60 yard pass over to the other side of the pitch and Liverpool are on the attack. This is a vital weapon to look for in an advanced playmaker.

Anticipation and decision making - for me the anticipation and decision making attributes are closley linked. They are also linked with the above two mentioned attributes. So in the examples that we described in the vision attribute, your player has seen your striker unmarked and in a good position. He is about to pass to him but then sees one of the defenders is closing in on your striker. Can he anticipate this has happened before it does and can he make a quick and the correct decision not to pass to your striker and then decide to lay it off short or look for another player. Its one thing having the good vision to be able to see the striker in a good position but making a right decision and anticipating what could happen next is vital.
